Kalm Psychiatry - Trauma Informed Psychiatry: Founded on Compassion, Empathy, and Competence

I built Kalm Psychiatry with an all-consuming desire to provide trauma-informed compassionate care to individuals who have suffered abuse, neglect, violence, and harassment. Along the way, I realized mental healthcare is not just medications, groups, or therapy.

Effective and true psychiatry is about providing a safe space to each patient. It is about listening before questioning, believing before doubting, helping before judging, and being present with their distress before succumbing to yours.

Trauma survivors can present as help-seeking and help-rejecting at the same time. This does not indicate falsehood. Quite the opposite, it underscores the dialectic of trauma (coined by Dr. Herman). They have to trust the same society to heal them that hurt them. Worse, they are judged before they are helped, if ever.

Fear and invalidation works in mysterious ways in and on our psyche and nervous system. No patient is the same. No journey is alike, either of the patient or the therapist. When we commit to walking with the survivors, we commit to walking in their shoes and embracing all the heartache and uncertainty that comes with it.

Trauma survivors challenge our concepts of morality and our conviction in the goodness of people around us. They challenge us to be human, demand a non-judgmental stance from us, and an empathy that is infatigable. That is all they ask. And that is what trauma-informed psychiatrists strive to do everyday. That is what Kalm Psychiatry does day in and day out, clinically helping survivors heal trauma wounds and get justice.
