Kaplan and Sadock's Chapter Published!

kalmpsychiatryllc

I'm excited to share this wonderful writing milestone! It has been such an honor to be a contributing author in Kaplan and Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, 11th Ed.

In any area of study, there always is one textbook and/or reference book that is considered to be the most decisive and definitive writing.

In psychiatry, Kaplan and Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry is exactly that. The buck literally stops here for anything related to psychiatry and mental health. When I was in clinical psychology graduate school and later during psychiatry residency, I loved this book! I won't pretend that I read all of it but I read the parts that really resonated with me. Reading Kaplan and Sadock was a different experience knowing that I was reading text written by stalwarts in psychiatry.

I was always drawn to the list of authors and the pages describing their work and expertise. I was fascinated by these individuals who had achieved such exalted position in their profession to be included within the pages of this book. To be considered a definitive subject matter expert must be such an honor and thrill and I dreamed what it would feel like.

Never in a million years did I think I would one day be actually listed right there, alongside all of these prominent psychiatrists and therapists, as a contributing author in Kaplan and Sadock, 11th edition. I was given this wonderful opportunity by Dr. Bob Boland at The Menninger Clinic when I was an early career psychiatrist. I cannot thank him enough that he put his trust in me and supported me in this endeavor. I miss working with all of you, Dr. Boland!

I have published several research and other articles in my career, before and after, but nothing beats the feeling of being a part of Kaplan and Sadock's and to contribute to a chapter (originally started by stalwarts in this area) and add my perspective to it in an area I am passionate about - the important role of spirituality in mental health.

To say I am excited and stoked is an understatement! Having taken a sabbatical from academia makes this all the more special! Such a wonderful coincidence that my chapter is placed right by the chapter written by two of my dear friends and mentors at Mayo Clinic, Drs. Jain and Stonnington!

Now looking forward to writing personal and non-academic pieces derived from my experiences as a psychiatrist and as a human. Hopefully, procrastination, the distress, and writer's block while writing about difficult subjects can delay but not deny creativity. More on that soon.....
