About Me

Trauma-Informed Psychiatrist in Arizona and Connecticut
Specializing in PTSD, Complex Trauma, and Emotional Abuse
I’m Dr. Shweta Kapoor, MD PhD, a board-certified psychiatrist with a PhD in clinical psychology, providing trauma-informed psychiatric care for adults across Arizona and Connecticut. I specialize in PTSD, complex trauma, emotional abuse, coercive control, workplace trauma and harassment, POTS, dysautonomia, MCAS, helping patients understand persistent symptoms and regain emotional stability.
I completed psychiatry residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Alabama, and fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. My clinical experience includes Baylor College of Medicine, The Menninger Clinic (top 5 nationally), and Mayo Clinic, Arizona.
My approach is patient-centered and collaborative, integrating therapy and medication to provide safe, effective, trauma-informed care. I offer telepsychiatry throughout Arizona and Connecticut and work closely with therapists and other providers for coordinated, individualized treatment. This dual training helps me carefully differentiate trauma-related symptoms from other psychiatric conditions, so treatment is tailored to you rather than based on checklists alone.
If you are seeking a trauma-informed psychiatrist in Arizona or Connecticut or want specialized assessment for PTSD, complex trauma, and dysautonomia you are welcome to reach out.
The Human Behind the Physician
I was born and raised in Chandigarh, India, at the foothills of the Himalayas. I am a fourth-generation physician in my family and the first psychiatrist. My dad is a physician and my mom was a history professor mother. They were generous to the core and I learned early on the value of empathy, curiosity, and respect for others—lessons that continue to guide my work as a psychiatrist.
Medicine is a way of life in my family. Thus, from a young age, I was naturally drawn to medicine. During middle school though, I started gravitating towards my creative self. I decided I wanted to be a portrait artist, a few months later I wanted to be a caricature artist, and lastly I became determined to become an architect. However, through the ups and downs of adolescence, I returned to my first desire of becoming a doctor. I continued making art and my favorite media are charcoal and pastel. My favorite thing to draw is horses.
In medical school, the human psyche fascinated me. I chose an unconventional path and earned a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and completed psychiatry residency. This journey deepened my love for both therapy and medication management, and for helping patients understand themselves in a safe, supportive space.
At home, I’m fortunate to share life with my supportive husband and two lively children, who remind me daily of the joys of curiosity, play, and connection.
I feel grateful to have found my calling. I strive every day to help patients feel heard, understood, and more steady as they navigate their mental health journey.
